When Healthy Competition Drives Innovation

Fresh out of Sitecore Symposium, I couldn’t help but reflect on how friendly rivalry fuels progress. When platforms like Sitecore and Optimizely push each other forward, the real winners are the brands — and the people — who benefit from faster, smarter digital experiences.

The “Elephant in the Room” of the DXP World

Let’s address the elephant in the room: Sitecore and Optimizely have been competing head-to-head for years. For anyone living under a digital rock, these two platforms are among the most influential in the Digital Experience Platform (DXP) space — constantly evolving, pushing boundaries, and occasionally throwing subtle jabs at one another.

At Sengo, we partner with both Sitecore and Optimizely. Why? Because each brings unique strengths depending on a client’s needs. We love both — and our focus is always on finding the right fit for the right use case.

Sitecore AI: The “Composed” Era Begins

This year, I had the chance to attend Sitecore Symposium, and the event was nothing short of inspiring. Brilliant minds, genuine connections, powerful case studies, and forward-thinking sessions filled every room.

One of the major announcements was Sitecore AI — a new generation of capabilities that are already live and in production with some of Sitecore’s customers. What stood out most was the maturity of the rollout. Sitecore didn’t just announce; they implemented first, a rare and commendable move in today’s software world.

But there’s a twist. Sitecore’s new AI offering is being positioned as a “composed” stack, which differs from the “composable” architecture Sitecore heavily invested in over the past few years. There are benefits and trade-offs to both approaches — a topic we’ll likely explore in a future Sengo article.

Optimizely Strikes Back with Opal AI

Separately, Optimizely highlighted a major update to Opal, its established AI Agent Platform: Opal now works with Sitecore. The announcement emphasized that Opal integrates with virtually any CMS/DXP or workflow tool—extending intelligence and automation across existing stacks. Customers can deploy Opal as a standalone AI platform (chat, workflow automation, custom agents) or pair it with Optimizely One for a deeper, embedded experience.

It was a clever and confident move from Optimizely, emphasizing its composable flexibility and its ability to integrate across ecosystems — even with competitors. Call it a competitive strike or a masterclass in positioning, it certainly caught attention.

Competition Sparks Progress

Now, let’s keep perspective. In the tech industry, competition isn’t something to fear — it’s something to embrace. Coming from someone with deep basketball roots, I’ve always believed that healthy competition brings out the best in all of us.

When companies like Sitecore and Optimizely push each other, customers win. New ideas emerge, features improve faster, and innovation accelerates. The energy this rivalry creates is what keeps the DXP space vibrant and evolving.

Two Great Platforms — One Goal: Better Digital Experiences

Here’s Sengo’s honest take:

  • Sitecore continues to demonstrate world-class innovation with its composed and composable product line — intelligent, integrated, and enterprise-ready.

  • Optimizely, on the other hand, is reinforcing its strength as a flexible, composable, and data-driven DXP that plays well across platforms.

At the end of the day, both ecosystems are solid, enterprise-grade, and designed to help brands deliver better customer experiences through personalization, performance, and intelligence.

Sengo’s Next Step

At Sengo, we’ll continue to explore, test, and push both technologies to their limits — and share what we learn along the way. Whether your organization leans toward Sitecore’s composed DXP vision or Optimizely’s composable integration model, we’re here to help you choose, implement, and accelerate the right solution.

Stay tuned — we’ll have hands-on insights soon from our team as we dive deeper into Sitecore AI and Optimizely Opal.
